Our calculator is an estimation of our carbon footprints, however, it is far from complete. As you are aware, we spend a lot of our time online whether it is to stream movies, to game, to browse through social media, to read websites. All this online content and data needs to be stored somewhere. Data centers and internet servers use large amounts of energy. All your online activity has a CO2 footprint too. It is hard to calculate though and the impact is continuously decreasing as big tech companies are switching towards green resources and a more circular economy.

Some numbers: One search can account for anywhere between 0.2 grams to 7 grams of CO2. One email is 4 grams of CO2, if it has attachments it can rise to 50 grams of CO2. The internet's footprint accounts for 2% of global emissions, that is as much as the aviation industry. People often say we should fly less but let us spend less time online too!

On average one person in the affluent world (Europe, Japan) will produce 10 tons of CO2 per year; in the USA and Australia that is 15 tons and in some Middle East countries (Qatar, UAE) that is even up to 20-30 tons/year.
